- Picture Assignment - Due January 31.
For this assignment you will provide me with a picture/snapshot of you along with a paragraph telling me about yourself. That way I can get to know you all! Please be sure to include a picture of yourself that actually looks like you do now. Also, please avoid giving me pictures of yourselves wearing sunglasses, low brimmed hats, costumes, standing far away from the camera, or other types of objects that conceal your face. The point of the picture is so that I can get to know you and recognize you. Your timely completion of this assignment is worth 5 points of your total grade.
- Attendance, Participation, and Reading - Attendance in class is highly recommended. Attendance on-line is required.
As far as the in-class component goes, there will be material covered in class that is not covered in the book or in on-line
discussions, and there will be material in the book and on-line discussions that will not be covered in class. Each exam will be
made up of approximately 50% of the material coming from class and on-line discussions, and 50% of the material coming from
the text and any other readings for the modules. For this reason it is strongly recommended that you attend class and read the
book/modules and participate on-line. Using one as a substitute for the others will prove to be a mistake. Should you miss a
class, you are responsible for the material we covered, so assume that you missed something important and get the notes from
another student in class. To a great extent, what you get out of this class depends upon what you put into it. Undoubtedly, if
you do the readings, do the modules, pay attention to the classroom and on-line discussion, and think about what you read and
hear, you will have questions and issues to raise. You are encouraged to ask these questions and raise these issues during
class and during the on-line discussions (as well as at other times).
- Examinations - There will be two examinations that will count for your total class score.
Exams will be in-class and will consist of some combination of multiple choice, true and false, matching, short answer, and/or essay. The
specifics of each exam will be discussed before each test day. You must take all exams at the
regularly scheduled dates and times, so please
plan your schedule accordingly. Exam 1 will be held in class on February 28, 2005. Exam 2 will be during finals week in the regular classroom. It will be held on Tuesday April 25, 1-3pm.
NOTE: you must provide your own Raspberry(pink) scantron for each test. The Raspberry scantron is available for purchase from the Bookstore or the UCF Office Supply Store. This form is raspberry in color with the UCF monogram on the front. The form measures 8 ½” X 5 ½ ” and is cropped in the lower corner. This is the only form that allows students to put their PIDs in the ID section on the scantron.
- On-line participation and modules - Each student will be asked to complete all unit modules and participate in the various course
discussions during the week in which they are assigned.
Your participation in the discussions may be extensive or little, but I expect to hear from each of you at least 3 times per topic.
For example, each module will ask you to consider the answers/issues involved
with several questions that relate to the readings for the week. You may
choose to post your thoughts about all of the questions, some of the
questions, or one of the questions. You may choose to post your thoughts
about a question of your own. You may choose to reply to many of
your fellow classmates responses or just a few of them. While your comments
will not be evaluated, per se, you must make substantial remarks in your posts. Substantial remarks include those that are considered and
well thought-out, that refer to course readings or discussion, or that completely fulfill web research requests. Posting to the discussion board with such
superficial items as "Ditto", "I agree", "This reading sucked!", etc. will not count as postings for your grade. Further, you will have points
deducted from your on-line grade if you post "flames", or other disrespectful remarks (see course expectations for further clarification).
Finally, while you may not post answers or replies to all of the
questions/considerations for each of the modules, all such topics highlighted
are fair game for your exams. For this reason, it is to your extreme benefit
to consider the issues raised, and to read all of the comments and replies of
your classmates. You may take a vacation from posting your thoughts to a
discussion group about the assigned readings for two topics only. This
applies to just the portion of the module about the assigned readings.
You must complete all other portions of all other modules. You may only
take two topics off. You are still responsible for learning the
information in the assigned readings for the topics you take off. With the exception of the discussion board groups of "Web Research Topic", "Main", "Technical Questions", "Notes", "Web Assign. 1", "Web Assign. 2", "Q about Exam 1", and "Q about Exam 2", topics correspond to discussion board groups. If you make substantial postings at least 3 times for each topic (except for your self-identified 2 topics vacation) you will receive the full amount of points for the on-line participation and modules portion of your grade. If you do not post at least 3 times per topic, or you take more than 2 topics vacation, you will receive the number of points that is proportional to the number of topics (out of 17) for which you did make 3 significant postings. For example, if you made 3 substantial postings for 14 out of the 17 possible topics, that is 82% of the time. Eightytwo percent of 35 (the total possible points for the on-line participation and modules portion of your grade) is 29. As such, you would receive 29 points for the on-line participation and modules portion of your grade. The following topics are the 17 I am refering to: "Policy Intro.", "Social Movements Intro.", "Policy and Social Change", "Marriage and Child Care" (for 2 weeks), "Reproduction Politics", "Domestic Violence", "Q on Web Assign. 1", "Employment", "Economic Equity", "Education", "Q on Web Assign. 2", "Heath Care", "Persuasive or Not", "Criminal Justice", "Social Movement Efforts", "Sexuality", and "Summary".
Web Research Assignments: Four of the modules (4-5 and 9-10) outline your 2 web research assignments. Please see these modules for the specifics of the 4-5 page assignments. Web Research Assignment 1 is due by midnight on February 20, 2005. Web Research Assignment 2 is due by midnight on March 27, 2005.
