Course Policies

  1. All exams will be discarded at the end of the immediate next semester. If you have a question about your final grade, please contact me prior to that time and as soon after the end of the course as possible.
  2. Grading for this class will utilize the plus/minus grading system.

  3. Make-up exams will not be allowed except in the event of a dire emergency or serious illness. Inevitably, these types of extreme, out of the ordinary events are accompanied by official notification (i.e., admittance papers from the hospital, note from doctor, notice of funeral, booking papers upon arrest, to name a few). While I am aware that this is not the only class you may have right now, and that you may have a life outside of this course, having a cold, not feeling well, having other non-exam related scholastic responsibilities, needing to take your brother to soccer practice, having to work extra hours, wanting to participate in a club event, or needing to help your roommate move, etc… are not serious illnesses or dire emergencies. This class, on exam day, should take priority over these types of everyday unexpected events/circumstances.
  4. If you have a dire emergency or serious illness on the day of the exam, you may take a make up if you provide me with the official documentation that details your emergency. In that event, you may schedule the make up exam. The make-up exam will be an all essay exam, and it will likely be a harder exam than the original was.
  5. You must complete all requirements in order to pass the course.  In other words, if you fail to complete any requirement, you will not pass the course, regardless of your grades on other assignments.  I do not grant "extra credit" assignments, and I do only grant "incompletes" in cases of emergencies or unusual circumstances.
  6. Remember, you will need to spend time outside the classroom working on the internet or in the library in addition to actual class time to prepare, study, and do assignments for this class. If you have other commitments which will not permit you to spend this amount of time preparing for this class, I do not advise enrollment. Further, if you are uncomfortable with computers or the internet and do not feel like you will be able to successfully complete the on-line portion of the course, you must withdraw.  This course is intended to challenge you. Therefore, your interest and hard work will likely be required in order for you to excel in this course. Disinterested, lazy students seldom earn a grade higher than a "D". Thus, if you are looking for a course in which you may neglect your academic responsibilities and still receive a passing grade, look elsewhere!
  7. If you are a college athlete and must miss class in order to attend a team sporting event, please furnish me with a list of class dates you will miss at the beginning of the semester (rather than coming to me every other week saying "I can't be here next week...").
  8. In the interests of being respectful and courteous to myself and all of your fellow classmates, please turn off your cell phone and/or beeper, etc. during class time.  The ringing and beeping that these items make is distracting to everyone.  Please be considerate of everyone in the class and do not bring these types of items to class or turn them off.
  9. I encourage you to see me during my office hours. These visits provide you with the opportunity to receive clarification or any material presented in class or in the readings, to receive special assistance with any problems you may be experiencing in the class, to discuss sociologically relevant issues, to discuss issues pertinent to your education and future career, etc. Being of assistance to you is part of my job, so please do not hesitate to take advantage of this time. If you are having trouble in the class, please don't wait till the day before the final to come see me because you don't understand any of the material. Come see me as often as you wish or need - that is what office hours are for! It is better to clear up problems as they occur rather than wait to "fix" them at the end of the semester all at once. You may also feel free to post your questions about the material onto the forum for this course.
  10. Any type of scholastic dishonesty is prohibited. Perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the UCF regulations.  Violations of the student academic behavior standards are outlined in The Golden Rule, the University of Central Florida's Student Handbook.  See http://www.goldenrule.sdes.ucf.edu/  for further details.

Þ     Cheating whereby non‑permissible written, visual or oral assistance including that obtained from another student is utilized on examinations, course assignments or projects. The unauthorized possession or use of examination or course related material shall also constitute cheating.

Þ     Plagiarism whereby another's work is deliberately used or appropriated without any indication of the source. Thereby attempting to convey the impression that such work is the student's own. Any student failing to properly credit ideas or materials taken from another has plagiarized. The University of Central Florida has recently started an account with turnitin.com., an automated system which instructors can use to quickly and easily compare each student's report to billions of web sites, as well as an enormous database of student papers that grows with each submission.  After submission of the paper, instructors receive a report that states if and how another author's work was used.

Þ     A student who has assisted another in any of the aforementioned breach of standards shall be considered equally culpable.

Þ     Possible academic action that can be taken by the Instructor, Chair, or Dean of College include:  Counseling, Loss of credit for specific assignment, examination or project, Removal from course with a grade of "F"

Þ     Possible conduct review action that can be taken by the Office of Student Conduct include:    Warning, Probation, Suspension, Expulsion, Permanent conduct record with UCF that is accessible by other institutions by request.

Þ     For more information, please contact the Office of Student Conduct at 823-2851.

    11.    Students with Disabilities:  if you are a student with a disability, you MUST register with Student Disability Services (SDS) if you need any accommodations in this class or from me.  After you have registered with SDS, they will contact me to let me know what accommodations you need, and at that time, I will be happy to make them.  If you are not registered with SDS, I will be unable to allow for any accommodations for you.
