Introduction to Case Briefs

Case briefs are summaries of the opinions handed down by the courts. These are used to reduce a case to a size that can be easily read and understood. Certain categories, such as 'facts' and 'issues' are employed to divide the opinion into key components for ease of analysis and to refresh the memory.
Case briefs are used by law students for study purposes, but they are useful for lawyers and legal researchers to keep track of the many cases they read in research on a case or an issue in a case.
For the legal novice, learning to brief cases is an important discipline which forces the reader to analyze the parts of a case and reveal its logical structure, including its logical fallacies.
