Basic Body Positions

Squat / Tuck

A tuck position is used in many skills such as forward rolls, squat ons, tuck jumps, etc.  Because it is the smallest, tightest position the body can attain, it utilized in skills such as the salto. 

  • The tuck is a basic position in which there is hip and knee flexion.  The knees are bent to maximum range and pulled up towards the chest.
  • A tuck position with the body weight supported evenly on two feet is called a tuck stand.
  • If supported partially be the hands it is called a squat.
  • A supported tuck is with the hands slightly in front of the feet with the weight shifted to the hands.
  • An inverted tuck is when the spine is when the hips are lifted above the shoulders.

Verbal/Linguistic

Sit on the floor with the torso vertical.
Ribcage and abdominals are lifted. 
Keep the spine vertical.
The hips are bent.
Bend the knees to maximum range and point the feet. 
Pull the knees to chest with upper back straight. 
Help by grasping knees and pulling to the chest.

Visual/Spatial

See bent knees together, close to chest 
Tuck the body in tight like a ball


Logical/Mathematical

Knees and hips bent at least 90 degrees
Make a symmetrical body position

Bodily/Kinesthetic

Feel feet and knees together
Feel thighs touching the chest
Feel shoulders pressed forward and down
Feel abdominals tight

Naturalist

Make the shape of a raindrop
