Halloween Ghost Throw

Purpose:

throwing

Materials Needed:

Tennis balls or 'nerf' tennis balls, Cheese cloth, Rubber bands, Masking tape, Magic markers (optional), Pumpkin, leaf, and other "fall" cutouts for targets on the wall, Ghostbuster tape/song

Organizational Pattern:

scattered

Description:

Place a square of cheese cloth over a tennis ball and then put a rubber band around it. This makes a 'ghost' (you can even add a face to it with magic markers if you'd like!). As the students practice throwing underhand or overhand, the 'ghosts' fly through the air (students love this!!!!) Also, place the pumpkin and other targets on the wall.

For an instant activity, have students make different pathways while moving safely through general space, all to the song "Ghostbusters".

After introducing the throwing cue you will be looking for in this lesson, have students then begin to either underhand throw (by self) in a self space or throw overhand to a partner, all while emphasizing the cue you are looking for in that lesson.

When most students have achieved success with this, have them move to throwing to a target on the wall. Observe them as they do this, seeing if they are correctly using the cue for that day.

Note:

a good way to do this is to tell them that if you see them practicing the cue many times correctly in their space, you'll tap them on their shoulder--which means they can then go to a wall target.

Modifications:

One can use a bean bag instead of using ghost shaped balls and paint a face on the bean bag. A change of music would be important too.
