Snake Scramble

Purpose:

To help students move safely through general space

Materials/Equipment:

Ropes of different sizes scattered throughout playing area. At least one per child but may use more.

Organizational Pattern:

Scattered Formation

Description of the Activity:

Tell students they'll be challenged to move through general space today by playing the activity "Snake Scramble". The only rules of the game are this:

  1. students have to move to the empty places around the room;
  2. they can't follow anyone

If students touch a rope or another student while moving around the space, they must jump back and forth over a rope on the ground 5 times quickly before starting to travel again. Call out different locomotor movements for them to do.

Have the students move to a self space before you give the signal to go. Give enough "stop" signals to allow students a breather and for you to give them feedback on how they are doing; give a new movement for them to do on the "go" signal.

Safety Precautions:

  • Use the minimum amount of ropes that still allow for plenty of empty floor space, especially when first using the activity with students. As students get better at travelling safely through general space, additional ropes can be added.
  • As students get better at this decrease the size of the playing space or increase the amount of ropes on the floor.
