Bridges and Stones

Name:

Bridges and Stones

Grade Level:

2nd Grade and Up

Materials needed:

Cones for space boundaries

Rules of the game:

Divide the class into two groups. Designate one group to find a good space (4ft. apart) in the playing area. Have them make their body into a bridge. On the teachers signal the rest of the class tries to go under (or through) as many of these "body bridges" as possible. Set a time limit or use music to designate the amount of time needed for the game. Challenge the children to change the levels and shapes of their bridges. Have the traveling children perform different motor skills movements to accomodate themselves through the bridges. Reverse roles as often as you want.

Teaching strategies and modifications:

Stones - Have the students form their bodies into tight shapes (i.e., stones) and then have the rest of the students step or crawl over the stones. Do not have students jump over the stones. Stress that the stones need to stay in tight shapes at all times, especially as travelers are going over them.

Students can not go under the same bridge or over the same stone twice. They must visit another stone or bridge before coming back to the same one. Make sure you spread out the bridges and stones so it appears like a journey.

Safety Tips:

Make sure only one person is allowed to go under the bridge at a time. Watch out for students arriving at the same time at a bridge. You do not want students knocking heads as they go under the bridges.
