Purpose:
To increase student's locomotive skills and spatial awareness
Materials Needed:
poly spots
Organizational pattern:
scattered formation
Description of the Activity:
The students will be involved in an activity that involves changing pathways in order to avoid being tagged by someone. The students will be lined up on one side of the gymnasium. (Make sure the pathway length is appropriate for the students.) Two people will be the designated aliens, and they will stand in front of the class. At the instructors signal, the children on the line will ask the two in the middle "Man from Mar, man from Mars, will you take us to the stars?" At this, the two children in the middle will respond with "Only if you (choose a locomotive skill.)" The children in line will now try to get across the room using this locomotive skill with out being tagged by the aliens. If they are tagged they must get a poly spot where they were tagged, and they may then try to tag other people as they pass by. One foot must always remain on the poly spot.
Modifications:
The people who are the aliens can be switched throughout the game. To make the game more challenging, have the aliens use the locomotive skill as well.
