Three Person Dodgeball

Purpose:

  • Dodging and to increase students' ability to perform dodging movements
  • to stay on balls of feet
  • face the person who is throwing
  • moving feet quickly

Maintenance and Equipment:

one medium yarn or small soft foam ball for every 3 students

Organizational Patterns:

Groups of Three

Describing Rules and Boundaries:

Have two students stand facing each other approx. 18 feet apart; another student stands in the middle. The students on the outside are the throwers and the person in the middle is the dodger. The throwers throw the ball at the dodger, trying to hit the dodger below the waist. Stress how the person in the middle needs to "stay on the balls of their feet", "face the person who is throwing", and they must use "quick feet" in order to be successful. If the person in the middle is hit, the person who threw the ball goes into the middle.

Variation:

Have throwers only get 10 throws each, then switch thrower in for a dodger. That makes it equal for every one. For the higher skilled make the area smaller in which to move. Mark off an area with cones and make them stay in that area. Use teaching by invitation so kids have the choice to do this.
