 Course Description:

Overview of the basic principles of the immune response involving cells tissues and molecules. Antigen - antibody interactions, cell mediated immunity and an introduction to Immunopathology.

 Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students will be expected to:

  1. State the function of the cells involved in the immune response.
  2. List and state the function of the tissues and organs in the lymphoid system
  3. Describe the role of complement and compare the two pathways of activation.
  4. List and describe the molecules, mediators and cells involved in the inflammatory process.
  5. Compare and contrast the structure, function and receptors of the immunoglobulins.
  6. Define the role of the T-cell receptor and the MHC molecule.
  7. Explain the concept of immunoglobulin diversity.
  8. Describe the process of antigen recognition by antibodies and T cells.
  9. Summarize the important regulatory elements in the immune response.
  10. Define immune tolerance.
  11. Compare and contrast the immune response to viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
  12. Describe the various types of vaccinations and compare their effectiveness.
  13. Define immunotherapy and its role in tumor immunology.
  14. Describe the clinical manifestations and causes of immunodeficiency.
  15. Compare and contrast the 4 main types hypersensitivity reactions with regard to causes and clinical manifestations.
  16. Summarize the immune mechanisms involved with graft rejection.

 Required Text:

 Basic Immunology: Functions and Disorders of the Immune System; Abul K. Abbas and Andrew H. Lichtman, W.B. Saunders, 2001

 Optional Material:

Course Pack of Lecture notes: Available at the Campus Bookstore only, will not be available on-line.

 Evaluation:

Tests - There will be 7 announced multiple choice exams. One grade will be dropped and each exam is cumulative. No make up exams! Each exam is worth 1/6th of your final grade.

Tests cover the textbook, lecture notes and all material covered in class. Students are responsible for obtaining missed notes from classmates if they cannot attend class. Do not contact the instructor for missed notes! It is your responsibility to attend class and obtain any information that you may have missed.


Grading Scale: 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, below 60=F

Grades are NOT curved. What you see is what you get.

 Additional Policies:

Grading and evaluation - The lowest test grade will be dropped.

Attendance - Absolutely no makeups for all exams!

Extra credit - Extra credit is not possible due to the size of the class.

Accommodations - Students needing support for disabilities need to let me know and make arrangements before exams.

Academic integrity - Review the code of conduct! Tests will be monitored and students found cheating will be dismissed from class.

Exam Policies -

Academic courtesy - Show consideration for your classmates! Walking in late, leaving early, talking, cell phones, beepers, etc are distracting and demonstrate lack of consideration for others who may want to learn.
