Module 4: Assignment B

eme2040 - Introduction to Educational Technology
Debbie L. Kirkley

Classroom Technology Scenario

Scenario: Consider yourselves as teachers at a school with little technology or outdated technology. You have just been told that you have been awarded funds for technology in your classroom ($5,000). Your principal has asked you to make a list of what you want (needs and desires) - hardware and software.

Each team has been divided into areas of interest. Create a list of items to submit to your principal. When considering what will be on your list, use the following criteria:

As a team:

  1. Determine the grade level and/or area of interest for your class. Only one class will be represented in this scenario.
  1. Create a list of hardware items, including peripherals (printers, scanners, digital cameras, DVD player, etc.)

  2. Create a list of software items - include titles, costs -check on site licenses.

  3. Determine the cost of the items (round off). Do searches online, visit hardware and software websites or estimate the cost.

  4. It is best to assign different people on your team to look up different items. (Ex. 2 people look at computers, 2 people look at software applications, etc.)
  1. Does this meet the amount of funding? If not, slim down your list or beef it up (you want to spend as much of the award as possible).

  2. Explain the reasoning (one paragraph) behind the need and desire for the items. This can be a summary at the end of the list.

  3. Now here comes the FUN part!! This semester we're going to try and use an emerging technology (a WIKI) for this assignment. The Wiki can be used as a workspace for creating your list. Each member of your team will be able to post to and edit the list here. We want to keep up with the latest technology, so this will be a great experience for all of us! Since this is something new to you, I won't expect perfection, but I do want you to at least try to use it. I have chosen a free WIKI application online that seems to be fairly easy to use.

WIKIs can be elaborate or they can be quite simple. There is a special language they use - similar to HTML but different. Some HTML can be used to create aesthetically pleasing Wikis. You are only required to do the minimum with the Wiki for this assignment. I will even provide you with a skeleton of how your page can look. We are going to use Wikispaces for this assignment. I have already created a space for your team. I will send you instructions on how to access your Wiki.

Submission Guidelines: Your Team Captain should notify me when the final list is ready on the WIKI. If your team experiences problems using the WIKI, notify me as soon as possible. You can use the Team Discussion area to communicate for the activity or you can try to use the Comments section of your Wiki. Evidence of team participation must appear somewhere to receive credit.
