HISTORY:
The  FAW, ACT Chapter, held its first meeting in Canberra on 29 May, 1950. Since then it has held monthly meetings, exhibitions and produced anthologies. The first of these was "Australia Writes", followed by "Australian Signpost", "Span" (on Australian-Asian writers) and "Australian Voices".

The meetings were first held in members' homes with guest speakers, workshops, members' read evenings and excursions to country venues on Sunday afternoons twice a year. Pioneer members included Tom Hungerford, H.M.Flinn, Tom Inglis, Ian Pratt, Alec Bolton, Rosemary Dobson, Judith Wright, A.D.Hope, Russel Ward and David Campbell. Sir Robert Garran was the first Guest Speaker in July of the first year with Manning Clark in September and Gavin Long in October.

The anthology "Australia Writes" was published by Frank Cheshire of Melbourne and sold out quickly. The third anthology was edited by Lionel Wigmore, as he had many contacts in Asia. It also sold out. "Australian Voices" was the next anthology, published in 1975 and edited by Rosemary Dobson. Distinguished writers included in this anthology are Chris Wallace-Crabbe, Gwen Harwood, Hal Porter, Jennifer Strauss, Fay Zwicky, Marian Eldridge, Les Murray, Ted Egan, Bobbi Sykes and Geoff Page.
