Dr. Richard Cornell, International President

President's Message 1997 - It is a new year, a Revitalized CPAW!

I would like to first extend my most sincere wishes to each of you as we enter a new year, a new era in CPAW.  I waited until now as I know that, for some, the "new year" does not always fall on January 1st.

It was my pleasure to have spent two weeks in Australia, during which time I had a chance to meet with our founder, Dr. Malcolm Beazley, as well as our most Honorable Webmaster, Gerard Yeo.  While my time in Australia was supposed to be a holiday (my first in ten years!), I could not, would not, pass up the chance to spend time with these two fine individuals.

We discussed many things of importance to CPAW and among the items we covered were two of note: our current and future funding concerns, and providing some guidance to each of you who serve so loyally as our national, regional, state, and special interest areas of study.

Funding first:

By now you know we have established a Treasury and, considering the very modest dues structure, we encourage each of you to send in your dollars, francs, lira, drachma, pounds sterling, yen, marks, krona, etc. so that we may begin to offer some additional services to you and to each of our members.

Please see the proper mailing address as shown below. My sincere thanks to each of you who can reply to our request for dues remission.  I will speak no more of this in the hope that one mention is sufficient.

The dues (in US Dollars) are:

 $50.00US (Institution)
$20.00US (Individuals such as seniors and other citizens)
$10.00US (Individual student)

Please make cheques payable to Computer Pals Across the World (CPAW)

 and send it to

Duties of our directors:

I often get asked the question: "Now that I am a national (regional, state, special subject area) Director, what, specifically should I be doing?"  In brief, here are the tasks which we hope you might undertake:

    1.  Recruit new members, both individuals and schools.

    2.  Encourage each of your members to communicate with us so that any suggested activities you might wish to begin might be considered and implemented.

    3.  Communicate with local universities, especially those who prepare teachers, and spread the word about CPAW.

    4.  Let us know of any available grant agencies or foundations within your country who might be interested in acting as a corporate sponsor for one or more of our CPAW activities.

    5.  Finally...communicate, communicate, communicate!  Tell us what news is happening in your nation, what problems you face, and how CPAW  might help you.  In this regard, please send Gerard a current photograph of yourself, and a few short sentences about you.  In that way, I hope we can have our own version of "Who's Who in CPAW."  If possible, scan in your photo and save it as a jpeg or gif file, and you can transmit it to him very easily.  Otherwise, just send him a photo in the mail and he can scan it for you.

It is our hope that, perhaps in the coming year, we might be so bold as to undetake an international conference.  I know that Con in Greece is looking into this possibility and some of you may also wish to suggest a venue, as well as line up some corporate sponsors to help with the expenses involved.

I envision 1997 to be a real growth year for CPAW and look to each of you to make this dream come true.  Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if I may help you.

My own travel schedule calls for me to be at the AECT (Association for Educational Communications and Technology) annual conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico from February 11-16th, to attend the ICEM (International Council for Educational Media) Media Week in Berlin the first week of March, to possibly be in Belgium in May or June, and to be in Lisbon the first week or so in October for our ICEM Congress.  Aside from that, and between teaching classes, I shall most likely be pulling weeds in my garden.

I wish, for each of you, a wonderous 1997!

Kindest regards,

Richard "Dick" Cornell
International President
