MEDIA ACADEMIC TO HEAD GLOBAL NETWORK

Dr Richard Cornell, Associate Professor of Instructional Technology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, USA has been nominated the new President of the CPAW (Computer Pals Across the World) global educational electronic network.

CPAW, now in its thirteenth year of operation has been a pioneer in the use of Internet technology in schools and across the curriculum and was one of the first educational electronic networks in the world. From its initial link between Sydney, Australia and Wainwright, Alaska, the network has grown to include students from schools and universities in more than twenty-five countries. Additionally, CPAW provides services to the home and hospital-bound and to senior citizens around the world.

Dr Cornell, who is also the Vice President of ICEM (the International Council for Educational Media) is well credentialled to head the CPAW network.

Speaking today by phone from the University of Sydney in Australia, CPAW Founder and immediate Past President, Dr Malcolm Beazley AM said:

" Dr Cornell's knowledge and expertise in the educational use of global state-of-the-art technologies will provide a valuable impetus to take CPAW well into its second decade as a leading educational network."

" While there is now a plethora of international educational networks as the Internet has become more widely known and used as a tool in the classroom, there is still a great need to monitor the effectiveness of the use of such technology in education."

Dr Cornell is very keen to use CPAW to provide up-to-date research on best practices related to the use of Internet technology in the classroom.

When told of his nomination and subsequest appointment as the next president of CPAW, Cornell stated:

"I am honored to be named to the office and humbled as well. The enormity of current Internet use provides our members with both challenge and opportunity.

Challenge in that we will be faced with current and future scenarios of global significance, not the least of which centers on who will have access to what information, spanning both borders and oceans.

Insuring that CPAW continues to uphold its educational and cultural mission, while continuing to promote positive social values will continue to remain a major focus.

Opportunities abound as increased efforts will be undertaken in the coming year to explore a variety of international research agendas and to develop specific teaching modules which tie in CPAW to diverse curriculia at different levels within the educational system.

In this regard, it is hoped that collaboration will be undertaken between CPAW and a select number of international professional organizations with whom we have like-minded objectives and goals.

It is our collective hope that CPAW will continue its international leadership role as we face the new century. "

In September of this year, Dr Cornell will be moderating an Online Seminar at " Teleteaching '96" in Canberra, Australia where educators from over fifty countries will meet to discuss the use of distance education technologies in teaching and learning.
