LIGHTHOUSES OF THE WORLD

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the “Computer Pals Across the World” Global Educational Network

In Honour of our President Dr Gillian Eriksson

Throughout the centuries and around the world, lighthouses have guided sailors and ships safely to their destination. Likewise the CPAW network has guided teachers, students and community members in the use of state-of-the art telecommunications technology for use in the global classroom, for twenty-five years. To celebrate CPAW’s 25 year milestone, we at Queanbeyan High School, in Australia invite you to join the celebration by being part of the “Lighthouses of the World” project.

Please respond to the following tasks by providing:

• the name of your school or educational/community institution. • the country in which you live • your email address • the name of your nearest lighthouse or one that you have visited • location of the lighthouse • an original jpeg photo of the lighthouse with name of photographer • the height of the lighthouse • whether it is active or deserted • the date built and brief details of its history • details about the light such as the size and numbers of watts • any other information you think would be of interest

Thank you for helping us compile this information.

International Writer's Week 2008! ======

China Online at Queanbeyan High School

Through the Computer Pals Across the World (CPAW) global network, students at Queanbeyan High School in Australia are enthusiastically engaged in a writing exchange program with China. Students at the Chengdu Meishi International School in China have been matched with students from Queanbeyan High School for a weekly writing exchange based on topics such as culture, hobbies, schooling, music, popular authors, computer games and sport. This intercultural program which is conducted at recess and lunch times, is aimed at improving writing and language skills, as well as learning about life in another country. The program is being supervised by a senior student, Acer, who has recently arrived at Queanbeyan High School from China. Acer agrees that this program is very effective in improving his English. “In addition,” says Acer “although students are living in a far distant land where people have a different culture, we still find this communication actually improves our knowledge and expands our vision by knowing people’s lifestyles in different countries.” The Coordinator in China, Mrs Allan, is by coincidence, a former teacher from Queanbeyan! When Mrs Allan wrote from China to join the CPAW network she had no idea that her first link would be with Queanbeyan. Chinese computer pals have been particularly keen to learn more about swimming carnivals as they do not hold such events at their school. Queanbeyan students will showcase the outcomes of their online experiences, in a static display in the school library.
