Course Description:

This course will focus on the development of the juvenile justice system and will provide an overview of the administration of juvenile justice. The course will begin placing juvenile justice in context by reviewing how we theorize about the causes of and explanations for juvenile crime. We will also briefly review punishment philosophies and public perceptions of juvenile crime which when combined with theories of crime, guide official responses to crime in America. The bulk of the course will utilize social science research to explore the official response to juvenile crime by focusing on decision-making within the juvenile justice system. Aggressive/alternative approaches to juvenile crime and their effectiveness will also be studied and evaluated.
