Syllabus

Course Requirements

• Readings
  All students are expected to read the appropriate chapters in the course texts and any other assigned readings by the first class period of each week (unless otherwise informed). Additional readings may be assigned during the semester.

• Article Summaries
  Each student will prepare a short summary of at least ten articles and prepare these summaries to be posted on the Course homepage by 5PM on the Monday before the class meeting on the week in which the article sets are assigned; 5 must be posted by Monday of Week 5 and 5 must be posted by Monday of week 15. Students may select the articles. Articles that will be summarized include both the articles on available on the website. Late posting will result in grade reduction.

• Exams
  There will be three exams; the third will be during the final exam period.

• Exercises
  There will be several skeletal (or other) exercises/identifications.

• Case Study
  Each student will prepare a typed essay (this essay must also have citations within the text as well as a bibliography). The essay will define the funerary rituals of a non-Western group of people based upon ethnographic or historic descriptions and will then indicate how or if these funeral rituals would be reflected in the archaeological record. The topic must be approved in advance by the professor. This research will also lead to a class presentation and a posting on the class forum; the posting will include a summary of the topic, selected bibliographic references, and definitions of key terms. Late materials will result in grade reduction.

• Course Grade
  The course grade will be dependent on the tests (20% each; 60% total), essay and presentation (20%), and participation (20% - this includes article or other posting, exercises, and classroom participation (which requires attendance in class).
