Syllabus

Course Requirements:

All students are expected to read the appropriate chapters in the course texts and any other assigned readings by the beginning of the week that they are listed in the syllabus (unless otherwise informed). In general, the course will follow a lecture format; discussion is, however, encouraged at any point during the class. It should be cautioned that the lectures and readings will not necessarily overlap; however, each series of topics will be included in any examination. Readings for each week are indicated below. Each student will need to post a review of two of the supplementary readings EACH WEEK prior to the time that the class meets on Tuesday. These postings need only be 1 paragraph in length and follow the format provided below for the additional readings; the readings may be found within the WebCT portion of this class and are available as downloadable pdfs; unless otherwise informed, if the weekly deadline is not made, an individual will be graded down. Appropriate videos will also be screened during the course; these may vary slightly from those listed.

There will be three in-class examinations on the subject matter, the final one to take place during the formal examination period at the end of the semester (December 5, 2005 from 10:00-12:50). The dates of the first two exams may be different from the syllabus depending upon the pace of the course. Make-up exams will not be given after the original exam has been returned to the class (usually the exams are returned in the next scheduled class time). The overall course grade will be dependent on the three tests (75%) and on the successful and timely posting the articles that have been read, the successful and timely completion of the archaeology exercise, and on classroom participation (25%). Grading will use the standard UCF +/- system of equivalencies. The withdrawal deadline for this course is Oct. 13, 2006. Students who are not officially registered in the class will not have exams graded or returned. Fall holidays are September 4, November 10-11, and November 23-25.

FLAC:

An additional 1 cu of credit (SPN3933 Sect ?) may be gained by students wishing to undertake related readings in Spanish through the Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum program at UCF; if interested, please see instructor prior to completion of drop/add for over-ride forms (and the articles).
